Why Jissenkō Ryū Karate Does Not Use the Title Sōke

Within our style, Jissenkō Ryū Karate, the title Sōke is not used.

In traditional Japanese martial arts, Sōke is commonly understood to refer to the head of a lineage or family system, often associated with hereditary succession or absolute lineage authority. While this structure exists in some arts, it does not align with how our style is designed to function.

Avoiding lineage worship

Within our style, Jissenkō Ryū Karate, we have made a deliberate decision to avoid lineage worship.

While respect for history, influence, and contribution is important, we do not believe a martial art should revolve around the elevation of a single individual as an unquestionable figure of authority. Systems built around lineage titles can shift focus away from standards, accountability, and ongoing contribution, and towards reverence for position alone.

Our emphasis is on the quality of the art, the standards of instruction, and the people who train within it, rather than symbolic lineage authority.

Authority through structure, not titles

Within our style, Jissenkō Ryū Karate, authority is established through structure rather than inherited or symbolic titles.

This includes:

  • defined technical and instructional standards

  • measurable assessment criteria

  • accountability of instructors

  • oversight through a founding board

Titles that imply absolute or hereditary authority are therefore intentionally excluded.

A living system, not a shrine

Jissenkō Ryū Karate is intended to be a living, evolving martial art. It is expected to be tested, questioned, and refined over time. Lineage worship can place tradition beyond scrutiny and discourage necessary development.

By not using the title Sōke, we make it clear that no individual is beyond review and no role exists purely for veneration.

Respect without idolisation

Within our style, Jissenkō Ryū Karate, respect is fundamental. Idolisation is not.

Respect is demonstrated through discipline, conduct, teaching, and responsibility — not through enforced reverence to lineage titles.

Our position

The absence of the title Sōke within our style, Jissenkō Ryū Karate, is intentional.

It reflects our belief that martial arts leadership should be accountable, standards-driven, and open to scrutiny, without reliance on lineage worship.

Other styles and organisations may choose differently. This is simply the position of our style, Jissenkō Ryū Karate, and the dojo that represents it, Voracious Karate.
