Criteria for Achievement of 7th–10th Dan
There is no physical grading or technical syllabus for 7th, 8th, 9th, or 10th Dan.
The 6th Dan syllabus already represents the maximum realistic demonstration of physical and mental mastery that can be formally examined. Beyond this point, further technical testing adds volume rather than meaning.
For this reason, senior Dan ranks above 6th Dan are not tests of performance. They are ranks of recognition, responsibility, and trust.
Promotion to these ranks is conferred, not graded.
1. Demonstrated Mastery of the Art
The individual must demonstrate complete and reliable mastery of the art.
This includes:
Consistent application of principles under pressure
Stable understanding unaffected by trend or fashion
The ability to adapt the art appropriately to different practitioners and situations
At this level, technical competence is assumed and does not require re-examination.
2. Senior Teaching Authority
The individual must demonstrate authority as a senior teacher.
This includes:
Teaching at an advanced level with clarity and consistency
Guiding instructors and senior grades appropriately
Maintaining accuracy and depth in the transmission of the art
Their influence must be dependable and grounded.
3. Responsibility to the System
Senior Dan ranks carry responsibility beyond individual practice.
The individual must demonstrate:
Commitment to upholding standards and values
Responsibility for the health, stability, and direction of the system
The ability to place the integrity of the art above personal recognition
At these levels, responsibility outweighs personal ambition.
4. Judgement and Restraint
At senior Dan level, judgement is paramount.
The individual must demonstrate:
Ethical restraint in the use and teaching of martial skills
Calm, reasoned decision-making under pressure
Awareness of legal, moral, and social responsibility
The ability to de-escalate situations rather than dominate them
Poor judgement is incompatible with these ranks, regardless of technical ability.
5. Conduct and Representation
7th–10th Dan are ranks of visibility and influence.
The individual must:
Represent the art with professionalism and integrity
Avoid ego-driven, divisive, or performative behaviour
Handle disagreement with composure and maturity
Uphold the reputation of the system at all times
Character is non-negotiable.
6. Discussion and Method of Award
Promotion to 7th–10th Dan is not automatic and cannot be applied for.
Each potential promotion is formally discussed and reviewed by:
The Voracious Karate Dojo leadership, and
The Jissenkō Ryū Karate style panel
This process involves:
Review of conduct, teaching authority, and responsibility
Consideration of the individual’s overall contribution and representation
Collective agreement that the individual meets the standard expected at senior Dan level
Promotion is awarded only when consensus is reached that the rank is justified.
There is no examination day, syllabus, or physical grading.
Formal Definition
7th–10th Dan are awarded to individuals who have demonstrated mastery of the art, senior teaching authority, sound judgement, and unwavering responsibility to the system. As the limits of physical and mental testing are reached at 6th Dan, these ranks are conferred through trust, observation, and formal discussion by the Voracious Karate Dojo and the Jissenkō Ryū Karate style panel rather than technical examination.
