šŸ… Protecting Tigers, Protecting What We Stand For — Voracious Karate’s Connection to WWF šŸ…

ree

I’ve recently signed up with WWF to help protect the future of wild tigers — an animal I’ve loved since I was a little boy, and still love now as a man and a Sensei.

My fascination with tigers began in childhood. I remember seeing them in books and on TV, drawn in by their striking beauty, their intense gaze, and the way they moved with such purpose. They weren’t just predators — they were leaders of their own domain, strong yet graceful, powerful yet measured. Even back then, I found something in myself that resonated with their nature.

Over the years, I’ve realised I share far more with the tiger than just the colour of my hair. Tigers are solitary and independent, but fiercely protective when it matters — traits I live by. They are patient observers, conserving energy until the exact right moment to act, which mirrors the way I approach both martial arts and life. Tigers don’t waste movement, and neither do I; everything has purpose, from the way I train to the way I teach. Like them, I am determined, strategic, and refuse to back down when something truly matters.

When I founded Voracious Karate, the choice of our club’s spirit animal was instant. It had to be a tiger. Our mascot, Terry the Tiger, carries that spirit proudly — and in true Voracious Karate style, Terry isn’t just any tiger… he’s purple. That purple connects directly to our club’s colours, making him a unique symbol of who we are. Even the ā€œKā€ of Karate in our logo contains a tiger, showing how deeply this animal is woven into our identity.

For me, tigers are more than just a logo or a mascot. They are the perfect embodiment of what our club stands for, representing 15 key traits that we aim to instil in every student:

Strength – The ability to face challenges head-on, physically and mentally.

Courage – Acting decisively in the face of fear.

Independence – Standing on your own two feet and forging your own path.

Protection – Defending what matters most with honour and responsibility.

Passion – Training, living, and fighting with fire in your spirit.

Resilience – Getting back up, no matter how many times you’re knocked down.

Leadership – Inspiring and guiding others with integrity.

Fearlessness – Meeting adversity without hesitation.

Determination – Committing fully to every goal and never giving up.

Wisdom – Applying experience and knowledge with good judgement.

Power – Using strength effectively, with control.

Confidence – Believing in your skills, your purpose, and yourself.

Focus – Maintaining clarity in the middle of chaos.

Instinct – Trusting your training and your gut when it matters most.

Authority – Commanding respect through action and example.

These aren’t just traits of a tiger — they are traits of a true martial artist. And they are traits I believe every member of Voracious Karate can develop through hard work, dedication, and the right guidance.

Tigers are my personal Animal Spirit. They remind me that power means nothing without discipline, and that leadership means nothing without protection. Like a tiger, I rely on sharp instincts, careful preparation, and the courage to act with precision when the time comes. They inspire me to bring those values into the dojo every single day, in my own training and in the way I teach my students.

In the dojo and in life, I move like a tiger — patient when I need to be, explosive when the moment calls for it. I watch, I assess, and I strike with purpose, never wasting movement or energy. Like a tiger, I lead by example, commanding respect through action rather than words. When I teach, I aim to pass on not just techniques, but the mindset — the instinct, the focus, the resilience — so that my students can face any challenge with the same confidence, strength, and precision that the tiger embodies.

By signing up with WWF to help protect wild tigers, I’m not just supporting an animal I love — I’m helping to ensure that future generations will have the chance to see and be inspired by these incredible creatures. For me and for the club, this is a way to give back to the symbol that has given us so much.

At Voracious Karate, we don’t just train bodies. We train minds, hearts, and spirits. And just like the tiger, we aim to be strong yet compassionate, powerful yet protective, fierce yet disciplined. This is who we are, and this is who we will continue to be.
